In 2016 The UNESCO Wester Ross Biosphere Reserve was established. Within this biosphere is found the largest remnant ancient Caledonian forest – a hyper-oceanic rainforest.

From the very southern border to just north of Ullapool at Assynt are fragments of temperate rainforest.
The Balmacara National Trust projects at Kyle, the Woodland Trust Scotland Gleann Shìldeag project and the Glen Torridon Partnership Project which joins Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve and Loch Maree islands and Coille Mhor. On the coast at Applecross, there is an oak and hazel rainforest. There are many more rainforest regeneration projects in Wester Ross. Twenty percent of Wester Ross is already designated as an SSSI. Linking all these existing projects and the new projects and encouraging everyone to plant native tree seedling would enrich the flora and fauna and greatly improve biodiversity. This would enable a pathway to be made for many to walk and enjoy these ancient temperate rainforests, see red squirrels, pine martens, sea eagles and rare dragonflies. The Scottish Rainforest Education Centre plans to assist in joining the links to make a Wester Ross Rainforest Pathway.
